Making the College Admission Process about You

Highschool me in Anything Goes

Greetings from sunny Southern California! My title is Jessica Frey (informally known as J Frey) and I am a Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at USC. I grew up in Hollister, a farm that is tiny in Northern California which has no affiliation whatsoever with the clothes store. I attended a big public school that is high over 3,000 students and somehow found my way to USC to learn theater. My hope is that through sharing my own experiences, I can give you some advice and help you feel at ease whenever you approach the faculty admission process.

Numerous of you readers will be deciding on college it, and I want to make sure you know this is going to be all about you before you know. It might feel a little weird and selfish for those of you who are always placing other’s needs before your personal. But in order you belong and feel happy, you do need to make the college search process all about yourself for you to make an informed college list and end up at a place where.

I don’t know I was in high school I made a lot of my decisions based on what other people were doing and thinking about you, but when. It is cool to wear red pants now? Okay, maybe I will go get that pair I was eyeing at the mall weekend that is last. All the other children within my class are applying to College XYZ? Maybe We should too. My therapist claims I’d be good at engineering since I like my calculus class? I wonder though I have NO IDEA what being an engineer is all about if I should apply to engineering, even. They were all real thoughts I’d since well as many others throughout that anxious and stressful fall semester of senior year.

You let your own thoughts and ideas navigate your choices while it is very easy (and sometimes a good thing) for outside influences to shape your decisions, the college process should be one where. Here are three basic principles I think every highschool student should retain in mind while they decide where they’re going to connect with college:

Focus on facts rather than opinions. Lots of people form views about different universities and colleges, however you should really give attention to yours ideas associated with schools along with the information you will find as you research the universities that interest you. It is important you are interested in a college because they provide something that you want in your undergraduate experience- not just because other folks you know are fans of the college, or because of its well-known reputation.

Reflect on that which you want in an university experience, and apply to schools properly. This is the time for you really to think about exactly what a college campus should have to allow one to be a happy and thriving pupil. Are you wanting to attend school in a big city or perhaps a rural college town? Do you want to study abroad in a particular country? What type of activities do you desire to pursue outside the classroom? Do you want to have the opportunity to function closely with your professors? It has everything you’re looking for, add it to the list if you find a school you’ve never heard of but! It doesn’t matter if nobody from your school or family ever knew about the college just before your discovery. Maybe it’s a place where you are going to have a college experience that is enjoyable.

Benefit from the search process! The process of creating your college list can be quite a daunting task, but it is also an enjoyable experience. This is your possiblity to learn as much as you can about the many amazing colleges and universities across the nation. This can be your time for you to explore the wide array of options and look closely during the colleges you are considering.

I really don’t compose this blog to tell you should not listen to your parents, counselors, or peers. You could have resources that are wonderful your disposal that provide great advice and understanding. Counselors find out about many different colleges that can have the ability to inform you more about the ones that meet your criteria. Your parents will be able to help determine which schools will be within reach financially. You just have in order to make sure their advice also aligns with everything you want in an university experience.

Having said that, we did buy and totally rocked the pants that are red. I’ll acknowledge if I could get in that I applied to a college I had no intention of attending just to see. I did get into the college, but during the end of the time that didn’t matter. It don’t make me feel better about myself and it was quite really a waste of the time and cash. But used to do follow my heart and became a theater major in place of an engineer, and I’m therefore happy I did. More on that later on.
